OMDE607 - Course Development Project
The ISD Process
Assignment Guidelines
Goal:
Skills development:
The primary assessment of your learning in this course is based on your development of an online distance learning course. You will soon be given access to the "Nighthawk Server" at UMUC, which is where you will undertake this work in Study Groups to which you will be soon allocated. You are asked to develop an online course because it makes sense within the current delivery environment of the program and because we have the capabilities of providing you with resources. However, the course is to be considered generic, and in principle, could be delivered using other media or delivery systems.
Your task will be to build the course within the WebTycho environment. Do NOT assume that your course should look like this one (or any other one you may have taken in the MDE program, for that matter). You will be asked to defend all your choices of learning and instructional design, including utilization of media capabilities for presenting content, activating and supporting student engagement with that content, assessing learning outcomes and providing feedback to learners.
Your grade on this assignment will depend not only on what you create as part of this task, but also on your engagement with the work of your Study Group. Each study group member is expected to act as a student reviewer in the courses of their team members. The feedback you provide to your colleagues will also count towards your final assessment mark for this project. I will be reviewing each course to examine your contribution and participation as a student in the courses of your team members.
The Content for Your Course
Choose something to teach that would be of at least passing interest to the other members of your team. Do not choose anything that you have already developed or have been developing for your organization. The goal is to learn a bit about the process, not simply complete the assignment with as little work as possible. Select a chunk of material that might take about 5 hours to study and complete the required activities.
Learning Journal – On- Line Instruction:
Goal:
Skills development:
In conjunction with the prototype classroom development, you are asked to keep a journal of the design and development process. This journal will document your thinking, your plans and activities in relation to your course development task. In this journal, I would like you to pay particular attention to the learning opportunity that this assignment activity presented to you. What did it enable you to learn about course design for open and distance learning settings? The finished Prototype Course alone would not necessarily be sufficient evidence of your understanding of the subject.
