This chapter of Seels & Glasgow's book focuses on delivery systems and how a designer develops and selects the appropriate technology for learning.  Learner characteristics, objectives, resources and constraints must all be identified before a system is selected. There are several to choose from:

My Choice: Using Integrated Technologies for Prototype Course

 

By using computer based technologies to support the job search student receive a great deal of information, maintain a level of control, provide feedback, use the instructor for resume critique, integrate classroom chats (asynchronous) to encourage student cooperation. Students can discuss job search issues with other students and the instructor either through the classroom or individual (personal) emails.   Text-based networked learning (NL) happens when computers are used to exchange information and access resources. (Haughey & Anderson, 1998, p.3). The teaching/learning endeavor relies heavily on the use of the Internet through e-mail communication, computer conferencing, and web activity. 

Integrated Technologies Mix

  1. Email
  2. Email is a simple text based communication feature, which connects two computers electronically through a hardware device known as a modem. Once the message is composed and received, it can be read, downloaded, stored, or forwarded.  Using email will help student get familiar w/ emailing resume documents (and other formatted documents) to potential employers. 

  3. Computer Conferencing
  4. Computer conferencing extends the features of email by increasing interaction for group learning. Interactive messaging supports two way communication where an individual types a message on the computer screen and the message appears on the screens of all other members of the group.  A "learning management platforms [such as webtycho or blackboard) enhances the students access to learning materials, internet sites, print documents, and other multimedia content (such as Discover) for student interaction with material and tracking services, such as an online portfolio (Chute, et. al, 1999, p. 43).

  5. Web (WWW) Activity
The World Wide Web is a component of the Internet and the student will use it to research companies and job sites. Moreover, the web has hypermedia capabilities, which allows for the transferring of data, graphics, sound, and video. (Haughey & Anderson, 1999).

Technology Infrastructure and Support

Learner: In order to access the NL environment, a student must have a PC, a dial up modem and an Internet connection.  Access to email requires a connection with an Internet service provider (ISP). Home users who purchase an ISP receive four essential services: 1.) A telephone line. 2.) An email address 3.) A password and 4.) A helpline and customer support service (Haughey & Anderson, 1999, p.17).
